| | Suzanne, Barbara, Diane, Ken, Bill Jr, and Bill Sr. | | | About Us
We have three generations living and working on Lions'
Gate. Bill and Diane own and manage the B&B. Ken and Barbara
(85 years young), Diane's parents, assist with
the coffee, occasionally are substitute innsitters and
help with staffing our phone lines when Diane is not available.
Suzanne manages the farm and Bill, Jr. helps with the
ever-ongoing farm construction/repair activities. We are
a team effort! | | | Top of Page About the Farm
We are a 15-acre working farm in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. We currently have 10acres of coffee, and 5 acres of macadamia nuts, both of which we sell commercially.
In addition, we grow numerous tropical and subtropical fruits including papaya, guava, mango, pineapple, oranges, coconut, banana, jaboticaba, passion fruit, rambutan, longan, soursop, avocado, wi fruit, blood orange, Kau orange, tangelo, tangerine, ruby red grapefruit, lemon, lime, atemoya, jabon (Chinese grapefruit), cinnamon, clove, lychee, Dorsett apple, surinam cherry, plum and starfruit. These are grown for our personal and B&B enjoyment and are not sold commercially. We also have many tropical decorative plants as well. Wander through our gardens of bromeliad, fascinating heliconias, several varieties of ginger, anthuriums, orchids, bird of paradise, plumerias, pointsettias, jasmine (pikake), bamboo, tube rose, many varieties of palm, ti, croton, angel trumpet flower, diffenbachia, scheleria, bougainvilla, gardenia, cycads, and hibiscus. Coffee has been farmed at Lions Gate for over a century and we have on our site an old coffee mill (now converted to a home for Ken and Barb). We frequently find antique bottles and cultural relics that date back to the late 1800's. In addition there are rock mounds running from the mountain to the sea that were a part of the ancient Hawaiian farm system. | | | Top of Page Farm Tours
We give complimentary tours of the farm if you are in
the Kona area and wish to see how your coffee and mac
nuts are grown. Please call or email for an appointment.
Or better yet, come stay with us at our B&B!! | | | Top of Page What is Estate Coffee? Our Estate coffee is a mix of peaberry, extra fancy and fancy beans, in the arabica class. We only sell coffee grown and processed from our farm so we can be assured of the quality. This qualifies us as an Estate grower. | | | Top of Page Our Roasts - Medium and Dark
We roast several times a week and rarely ship coffee that is more than 3 days old. Fresh is good!
Coffee roasting is an art, and our roaster, Suzanne, continuously
watches the bean during the process to ensure
that the color and consistency match the desired roast.
Contrary to common sense, a dark roast is lighter and
less caffeinated than a medium roast. This is because
the roasting process removes some of the bean's natural oils and
acids, leaving a dark roast with a lighter flavor. Most
coffee professionals recommend a medium roast for Kona
as more bean, instead of roast, flavor comes through,
but taste is highly subjective. Try your favorite today.
Our medium roast is a brown
bean with a dry surface. This
roast highlights the smooth Kona flavor, and is never
harsh or bitter. Many say it tastes slightly nutty. Preferred by those who like a "kick"
to their coffee. Medium roast is also called "City Plus". Typically the preferred roast of our East Coast and Midwestern customers.
Our dark roast is a rich,
black bean with a glossy sheen. The carmelized sugars in a dark roast give it a classically full-bodied"coffee" flavor with a smooth, not bitter, aftertaste . The taste
is unrivaled by any other varietal. This roast goes well
as an after-dinner drink or for those who like to breakfast with an excellently smooth and flavorful cup. This
roast is also called "Full City" or "Vienna". Preferred by our West coast and Asian customers.
Top of Page Green Coffee If you prefer to roast your own beans, we will gladly sell you green coffee. Our green is 100% Lion's Gate Estate Kona, as is all our coffee. Check our order form or contact us by phone. | | | Top of Page Shipping.
