The Season Approaches
It is the Final Days before the start of the harvest. The first of my picking crew has arrived. He is assisting with the suckering (removal of new growth) and prepping the field. I expect the rest my crew within 3-4 weeks and we should be picking in about a month.
From all accounts, it should be a bumper coffee crop this year. Five (5!!) flowerings in the spring have left the trees bent and breaking under all the coffee cherry. All over Kona, farmers are forgetting about last year's lean crop and excited about actually making money this year. It's a good feeling.
This should be a relaxing time, the last of the summer vacation. Instead, I feel like I'm on a slippery slope. There is the coffee mill refurbishment that is only half-way complete. The pulper is in pieces, bearings to be replaced, and the motors need reinstalling. The roof leaks on the Hoshidana (dry rack) and the darn foundation of posts and piers needs shoring up... a leftover from last October's earthquake.
And when am I going to have time to fix the pothole in the road that is about to swallow the farm truck?
But there is time. The projects never end. It is a farm after all. The mill will be ready. The road will get fixed. In the meantime, it's mango season and I must go pick some fruit. And the dogs are eating more ripe avocados than dog food this month, I can't forget to steal some from them for guacamole. And the lychee tree is fruiting too. Summer in Hawaii is good!

WOW...I just happened across your site while searching for wholesalers and noticed your blog....what a different world you live in...lol...I would love to see what you see everyday as I am sure a ton of folks would who live in the mainland...(such a funny label..it should be called the REALLY big island...thats what they all are anyway...lol).
I love coffee....I am sure I will enjoy reading about yours on the site....I don't think I have ever had Kona coffe beans before...I guess that gives me reason to try!!
I too am FORTY this year....SOON VERY SOON....the very last day of the month to be exact....somewhat looking forward to it...I don't really feel forty...whatever that feels like...however when I was a little one...forty seemed VERY OLD....so did thirty for that matter! I loved my thirties....I have heard forties are better...so we will see. I am also a grandparent....My oldest has a wonderful son who is 3 in Apr and she is having another son this winter!! NOPE still don't feel old..lol...My hubby is thirty-five and will be twice a grandfather..I bet HE feels old!!! HAHAHAHAAHA.....
I feel your AUGH on all the things needed to be done..ALWAYS...I too have that...I have friends that lounge around the pools all day waisting away and can't grasp my lifestyle....I guess I would feel useless if everything was working and cleaned and finished!..IMPOSSIBLE with four kids and 1 1/2 grandkids....not to mention the animals, reptiles and sealife we have in captivity calling them pets!..See I have to bring the tropical life to us since we can't go to it...lol
Now I am rambling like we are kindred spirits or something....so sorry...just have the 'GIFT' of gab....I will let you get back to your life now...
Have a good season and go pick me some beans...heeheee
