For the Record: Dirty Deeds
I am posting this excellent letter from farmers Barbara and Fred Housel because I want it entered into the permanent record of the blogosphere. For those of you outside of the Kona area, it is a documentation of the weasely behaviors perpetrated by large-scale Kona coffee processors Roger Kaiwi Machen (Captain Cook Coffee Co), Tom Greenwell (Greenwell Farms) and Cherry Ward in their takeover of the Kona Coffee Council.
The clowns have taken over the circus. Let them have it. They no longer represent the voice of the South Kona farmer. That privilege belongs to the Kona Coffee Farmers Association. We now have an Independent Voice, and intend to use it.

Re: KCC Proxy Vote Election
We are Kona coffee farmers and have been members of the Kona Coffee Council since 1999. We have not attended every KCC meeting since we have been members, but, in 2005, we participated in Cream of the Crop, staffed the KCC booth at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Cupping and Hale Halawi, and donated hundreds of dollars worth of our coffee to KCC for fund raising events. We also took an active role in the 2006 Annual General Meeting and elections.
We have taken great pride in supporting the Kona Coffee Council and its goals.
We are writing this letter to express our concerns about the recent KCC Elections which took place in January 2006. Since the election, there have been a multitude of claims and counter-claims about the results of the election.
Amidst all the controversy, we wanted to find out for ourselves the facts behind what actually happened in the KCC election.
One of the major questions was the use of proxy votes in the election.
We compiled a summary of the proxies voted in the January election and who submitted them
The proxy summary is as follows:
Dave Bateman 2
Roger Kaiwi Machen 109 ( ed. note...for shame, Roger)
Cherry Ward 31
Gloria Biven 4
George Fike 2
Donna Woolley 4
Total 152
Bruce Corker 7
Bob Smith 12
Sandra Scarr 22
Mary Lou Moss 5
Christine Sheppard 18
Colehour Bondera 2
Fred Housel 2
Total 68
Mike Rand 2
Roger Rittenhouse 3
Joanie Rowe 1
Grace De Aguiar 1

Leta Schooler 3
Randall DeAguiar 1
Total 25
Total Proxies

Total Votes

Percentage of Total Votes Voted as Proxies
67.1%
It is obvious that the KCC election was won on the basis of proxy votes.
Who were these proxies from? We compiled a complete list of all KCC members who signed proxies.
We reviewed this list with Tom Greenwell who confirmed that most of the proxies submitted by him via Cherry Ward were Greenwell employees. Tom also confirmed that most of the proxies submitted by Roger Kaiwi Machen were employees of Captain Cook Coffee Company, Kona Joe Coffee Co., and Bayview Estates Coffee Company. To our knowledge, these employees have never attended a KCC meeting nor have they actively participated in any KCC events. Therefore, it is apparent to us that the true purpose of their memberships and proxies was to simply acquire votes to swing the election.
The total KCC Election vote counts were as follows:
Bateman 223
Fike 219
Greenwell 214
Dilts 208
Kaiwi-Machen 206
Woolley 190
Smith 162
Wood 135
Scarr 133
Moss 116
Hennig 108
Griffith 85
Housel 83
Biven 24
The average margin of victory by the top six candidates over the second six candidates was by 87 votes. At the election, Roger Kaiwi-Machen was publicly observed marking all his 109 proxies identically to be voted as a solid bloc for the six winning candidates.
The net effect of all the questionable proxy votes was to elect the six candidates to the KCC Board of Directors. Without these newly acquired proxy votes, the six new directors would not have been elected. Never before in the 20+ year history of the Kona Coffee Council have the goodwill of the bylaws been subverted in this manner..
Even if the tactics used in this election may have been within the letter of the bylaws, was the election fair to the active membership and morally acceptable?
Our conclusion is that these tactics are totally unethical and we cannot, in good conscience, support KCC Directors who subverted the election for their own purposes. Some of the new Directors submitted no or few proxy votes, however, we believe, as they have taken no action to remedy the impropriety of the election, they are willing parties to the dishonest election..
With deep regret, we feel we must resign from the Kona Coffee Council. If the Kona Coffee Council can demonstrate it can hold fair and open elections of directors who support its members, then we would certainly consider joining the KCC again.
Sincerely,
Fred & Barbara Housel

If you want the world to know the facts, please state the facts and not your opinion. You should tell the whole story.
This is what was passed through email before the elections and also there was a flyer at the AGM.
VOTE FOR
Candidates Committed to Promote and Protect
100% Kona Coffee
1. GAIL HENNIG 4. SANDRA SCARR
2. FRED HOUSEL 5. BOB SMITH
3. MARY LOU MOSS 6. KATHY WOOD
DON’T BE FOOLED BY CANDIDATES FOR THE BLENDERS AND LARGE PROCESSORS WHO SAY THEY SUPPORT KONA COFFEE. THEY SUPPORT KONA COFFEE IN 10% BLENDS.
kcc Mission: to Promote & Protect 100% Kona coffee ONLY. dON'T LET BLENDERS TAKE OVER THE KONA COFFEE COUNCIL!
KCC MUST represent farmers’ interests. dON'T LET BIG PROCESSORS dictate the price of kona cherry.
We support the KCC Strategic Plan (May 2005) TO PROMOTE AND PROTECT 100% KONA COFFEE. THEY DON'T.
Our Goals for 2006
To further protect the Kona coffee name by seeking:
§ To add Kona coffee to 100% USA list under federal COOL legislation,
§ To raise percentage of Kona to 50% for blends to use the Kona name.
§ To raise the price of Kona cherry to $2.00/LB (to $2.50 in 2007).
§ To increase the percent of Kona sold as 100% by promoting 100% Kona coffee
in trade shows around the world.
§ To educate the public about the difference between 100% Kona and 10% blends.
§ To increase KCC membership to 400 by the end of 2006.
IF YOU AGREE: "IF ITS NOT 100%, IT'S NOT KONA COFFEE", VOTE FOR US!
IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 21 AT 9:30 AM THE KONA OUTDOOR CIRCLE),
PLEASE ASSIGN YOUR PROXY TO A 100% KONA CANDIDATE OR TO A MEMBER WHO SUPPORTS 100% KONA COFFEE.
FAX YOUR COMPLETED PROXY TO KCC TREASURER AT 324-6861 OR TO KCC PRESIDENT AT 322-9449.
Cmon and own up to what the six did. The coffee farmers dont go to meetings but they hear what was going on. They voiced their opinions by granting proxy votes.
On the contrary, I know of a female going to south kona gas stations and small stores to solicit a proxy vote from the owners who know nothing about what was going on. She backed the six who lost the election.
The six who lost currently have their own group to speak and fight whomever they want to. Whether it be the HCA, KCC and whomever. You have to remember that just because you attend a monthly membership meetting, it doesnt mean that you speak for the majority.
Bruce Corker and Colehour Bondera agreed to have their name on this:
Dear Fellow Kona Coffee Council Members,
In case you were unable to attend the Kona Coffee Council Annual General Meeting on January 21st, we feel it is very important for you to know that we believe the Kona Coffee Council has been hijacked by a group of processors stuffing the ballot box with unethical votes.
For how they did this, see below**
The KCC has been hijacked, albeit legally according to the By Laws, presumably to represent the interests of processors instead of farmers.
Are you concerned about the results of this election?
Do you think YOUR voice will be heard by this Board?
If these new directors have stooped to this level to get elected, can you trust them to represent your interests and concerns?
Now there is legislation coming up to increase the amount of Kona coffee in a Kona blend to 50%, exactly what the KCC membership voted for at the 2005 AGM, when the active membership voted, and not a block of proxies.
Will THIS Board support that legislation?
Ask your Board members!
Are you comfortable with this board representing you?
If you are, please pay close attention to make sure they really are acting in YOUR interests.
If not, respond to kopepua@gmail.com . We are moving on ……..
To be brutally honest, they(the six who lost) forgot that the KCC is for 100% Kona Coffee period!
"To Promote and Protect 100% Kona Coffee". Their new group wants the blends have more kona coffee. Good for them. But KCC is 100% Kona Coffee and it will always be that way.
Let the truth be known!
If you want to tell me the "truth", can we start with your name? I'd love to have a respectful conversation about the proxy votes at the KCC board election. But respect starts with two people, face to face. You know my name. Suzanne Shriner, Lions Gate Farms. I am not anonymous. Please share yours.
Mahalo and aloha. And I do mean ALOHA. This industry needs all of us to survive. I've said this publicly at meetings. We face serious issues in this industry, both from within the Kona borders, and from our growing competition in the specialty coffee world. More dialogue and less internecine fighting would be nice. More Ho'oponopono would be good too. But unfortunately, not enough people in this community even understand what that means.
So, come forward, and I will make ho'oponono with you. Stay anonymous and nothing will change.
I stated the "truth". So the world can read.
Aloha is shared with many people I have met since 1993. Although not many natives, I have to admit, I do not know what honopono means.
Please speak english, the language that you know and others would know what you mean.
You couldnt even defend your statements prior to my statement. It is easy to voice your opinion, its harder when the truth comes out. The truth is not your opinion, it is fact.
Why still anonymous? What is your fear? I'm not afraid to voice my opinion. Nor voice the truth. I'm not going to continue a discussion with you when you won't even dignify the conversation with the truth of who you are.
I assume you are a KCC board member. I hope you fight for 100% Kona coffee on the board. I hope you see that the processors want to drag feet with their talk of "studies" about marketing, packaging, truth-in-labeling etc. I will continue to be a member of the KCC so I can be a reminder to the board that farmers care, and that we are listening. My opinion may not be yours, but at least we agree. 100% Kona!
As for ho'oponopono, it is the traditional Hawaiian method of talking face to face to settle differences of opinions. It was vital way of maintaining peace in the familial Hawaiian communitites. As members of a Community in Hawaii, we would all be well served to honor the traditions of the land that provides us with the blessings of coffee. Otherwise, it is just Haole attitude.
I respect the Processors and their need to make a living. I do not respect some of their actions at the AGM or on the current KCC board. The actions of a few farmers attempting to block the takeover at the AGM were also wrong, but they justified it in light of the 168 "new member" shady proxy votes (NOT coffee farmers as you claim) gathered by the processors.
So this "truth" you keep talking about? I'm not really sure what it is. Nor why Just as I am not sure your motivation in commenting on my blog. If you really want to have a dialogue, I'd be happy to meet you for coffee (100% Kona of course) to discuss. I'm serious. Bring this off the computer and into real life, because this is REAL and shouldn't hide behind anonymous postings.
Call me, I'm in the book.
